The Kumtor mine plays a particularly important role in the economic and political life of the Kyrgyz Republic. It is the largest private sector employer and taxpayer of Kyrgyz citizens and is the largest foreign investment in the country. At our Kumtor Operations, partnership with local communities is an important factor for successful production activities. Guided by the principle of social responsibility, Kumtor Gold Company is carrying out a number of sustainable development and investment projects in regions where the Company operates and most of its employees come from.
At the end of 2015, the operation employed a total of 2,550 permanent employees, of which 2,470 or 97% were Kyrgyz nationals. This represents an increase from 82% at the beginning of the operation as a result of Kumtor's training programs and reflects a policy of employing as many local people as possible in the company's operations.
Since 1994 to the end of 2015 the Company successfully implemented a number of regional sustainable development programs with a budget of 50 million soms or more than US $ 27million. While implementing these programs, the Company strove to support local initiatives in creating sustainable projects designed to cope with social matters, expand rural infrastructures and strengthen the economic potential of the region with the focus on southern part of the Issyk Kul region and cities of Balykchy and Karakol.
In implementing its programs in the region, the company abides by the Strategy of Sustainable Development of the Issyk-Kul Region, which includes the following four components:
- development of agricultural sector;
- support for the growth and diversity of small and medium-sized businesses;
- collaboration with young people in the region and support for educational initiatives;
We see it as very important that by the end of operation in 2026 every project or initiative now supported by Kumtor can become independent, viable and beneficial to local budgets and communities.
In addition to our sustainable community development programs, we provide one-off donations, usually in form of in kind equipment or services. We receive many requests for support from across the country. Donation requests and proposals are reviewed on a monthly basis by KGC Donations Committee.
Our donations are not made in cash but rather through goods or equipment procured by Kumtor and provided to the recipients. Follow up monitoring visits ensure that the donations are used for the intended purpose.
In addition, we invest 1% of our revenue annually into the Issyk-Kul Development fund.
More detailed information on our investments into development of Kyrgyz economy can be found at KGC’s website.
